Rap mogul Russell Simmons has pledged to donate $2,500 (£1,563) to model/activist Christy Turlington's charity to send much-needed medical supplies to clinics in South Sudan.
Citizens in the east African country voted for independence in a referendum in January (11) and it officially became a separate state on Saturday (09Jul11) following years of civil war violence when it was part of the Republic of Sudan.
Former supermodel Turlington has now urged people across the world to donate funds to help improve maternal and child healthcare in South Sudan via her Every Mother Counts organisation.
Simmons has stepped up to contribute to the cause and he's urging all of his Twitter.com followers to give what they can too.
In a tweet on Monday (11Jul11), he wrote, "In honor of #SouthSudan independence, lets (sic) send med equip (medical equipment) & supplies 2 (sic) a clinic in need."
He then posted another message directed to Turlington, adding, "Thank you christy ill (sic) send 2500$".
