Def Jam founder Russell Simmons was yesterday (02FEB06) awarded a key to the city of Newark, New Jersey, in recognition of his work as a positive role model for young people.

Simmons, 48, was honoured by Newark Mayor Sharpe James for his tireless work with his youth group the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network.

Around 2,000 students attended the presentation, and the rap mogul had some words of inspiration for them.

He told the assembled kids, "Whatever they can imagine for themselves they can accomplish. Anything you can dream about, you can do."
