Ryan Gosling is currently the bookies' favourite in the race to play Christian Grey in the forthcoming adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Ladbrokes have placed the Hollywood hunk at solid 2/1 odds to land the saucy screen role, with Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder snapping at his heels, at 5/1. According to a report from the Independent, one female chancer placed a three figure sum on Michael Fassbender taking on the role, at odds of 3/1.
Numerous names have been bandied about in relation to the lead roles for the movie, which is adapted from a novel of the same name. EL James wrote the book as a work of erotic fan fiction (dubbed 'mummy porn'), inspired by Stephenie Meyer's own Twilight novels (which were also adapted into blockbuster movies). Twilight star Robert Pattinson also found his own name at the centre of the 50 Shades of Grey speculation and the gossip was so rife that he claims he had to ring his agent to see if he was actually likely to be offered the role. His agent reckoned not, so attentions now seem to have turned squarely on Ryan Gosling.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes told The Independent "The nation has gone 50 shades of crazy for the book so it's impossible to see how the film won't be a success either. The odds suggest 50 Shades will cane its competition in the box office." As far as the female role of Anastasia Steele goes, Mila Kunis has been tipped for the role at 3/1, with Scarlett Johansson at 4/1.
