Reese Witherspoon doesn't have many friends.

The 'Water for Elephants' actress - who married Hollywood agent Jim Toth last month - thinks being there for other people requires a lot of work but she places huge value on the small number of pals she does have.

She said: "I don't have a lot of friends. Friendships are work, You can only have a friend if you are a friend. You've got to be there.

"I really want to be the person who shows up for people when they need me. The friends I do have are very important to me. We tell each other everything. Stuff is hard to deal with, and we've gone through a lot together. Have an incredible support system. We're lucky."

When she does get to see her friends, Reese - who has children Ava, 11, and Deacon, seven, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe - likes to engage in physical activity.

She added "I'm pretty good at just hanging out. I like to be outside, either hiking with friends or exercising. I have a girlfriend and we run a lot, or do a yoga class or something."
