Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen is to re-edit his new film Bruno after it was given a NC-17 rating in the US, banning under-17s from seeing the comedy.
The Universal Pictures movie, due for release in July, sees British actor Baron Cohen in the guise of gay Austrian fashion reporter Bruno.
And with the studio eager to repeat the box office success of Baron Cohen's previous film Borat - which took $261 million in 2006 - the 37-year-old is to tone down his final cut of Bruno in order to secure an R rating.
After its first viewing of the film, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) awarded Bruno an NC-17 with a number of sexual scenes said to have earned the prohibitive rating.
"On its first submission the film did not receive an R, but it is far too early to say that there is any struggle to get there as the process is only at its inception," a Universal representative told TheWrap.com.
It is thought the controversial scenes included the Bruno character appearing to engage in a sexual act with another man and a scene in which he sneaks naked into a hunter's tent.
Baron Cohen to re-edit the film - as he was forced to do with Borat when it initially received an NC-17 rating - and is likely to save the near-the-knuckle material for the Bruno DVD.
