OSCAR-winning director Sam Mendes has founded an ambitious new entertainment company SCAMP FILM AND TELEVISION.

The American Beauty film-maker is returning to his theatrical roots with a series of stage adaptations, including a reworking of animated comedy Shrek and his version of classic horror SWEENEY TODD.

Mendes - who used to be the creative director of London's acclaimed DONMAR WAREHOUSE theatre - will oversee another 11 theatrical productions, plus a range of film projects including an adaptation of KHALED HOSSEINI's novel THE KITE RUNNER.

British Mendes has been on a sabbatical since directing Gypsy on Broadway last year (03), enjoying his new family life with wife Kate Winslet and baby son Joe.
