Scarlett Johansson has been ruled ineligible for a Golden Globe for her performance in 'Her'.

The 29-year-old actress has earned rave reviews for her voice role in the Spike Jonze-directed science fiction movie, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - which oversees the awards ceremony - has deemed that she will not be able to earn an accolade for the role.

The HFPA notified movie studio Warner Bros. of its decision yesterday (26.11.13).

The studio is heavily backing Johansson going into the upcoming awards season and she is still eligible for both the Academy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Johansson voices the internal operating system of Joaquin Phoenix's character in the romantic sci-fi film and her critically acclaimed performance has already earned her a Best Actress prize at the Rome Film Festival.

While Warner Bros. is campaigning for the actress, the Golden Globes and Oscars have never recognised voiceover work or motion capture performances.

Andy Serkis was shunned by both awarding bodies for his acclaimed motion capture work as Gollum in the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Hobbit' movies, and for his work as Caesar in 2011's 'The Rise of the Planet of the Apes'.

Johansson could still be in line for awards glory for her role in 'Under the Skin', which has also won high praise.
