Sex Pistols - John Lydon: 'I Am Not Sexist'
The British rocker hit headlines Down Under after his interview on Aussie Tv show The Project descended into chaos.
He was heard shouting at one of the hosts, Carrie Bickmore, and telling her to "shut up" as she tried to ask him a question, and she subsequently branded him "rude and arrogant and sexist".
Lydon, who is touring the country with his band Public Image Ltd, has now addressed the controversy and insisted the interview, which was conducted via videolink, was badly managed as all he could hear was the panellists talking over each other.
Following his arrival in Sydney on Wednesday (10Apr13), he told reporters gathered at the airport, "If someone is going to keep interrupting you and don't let you finish a sentence you are going to have to say something at some point whether it be male or female. To make a difference, that is sexist on her (Bickmore's) part not mine... My only enemies are the governments and institutions. Certainly not women. I've been married to one for 30 years. We love each other...
"There were a lot of people shouting at each other all at once and I couldn't quite make out what was what and some really silly and idiotic words have been used and bandied about since. It's quite clear to me I'm not a sexist and I'm not a misogynist."
However, he courted controversy again by comparing the panellists to a group of baying hyenas, adding, "I didn't know whether they were males or females at the other end, basically they sounded like hyenas. And you have to tell a hyena to 'shut it' from time to time."
When a female reporter asked Lydon whether he was deliberately trying to make headlines in a bid to sell tickets, he replied, "Just sell some tickets? I'm in the entertainment business, you silly girl!"
