Sharp-tongued talent show supremo Simon Cowell is to follow in the footsteps of U2, REM and 'N SYNC - by appearing in acclaimed animation series The Simpsons.

Cowell, a judge on US talent show American Idol, made a lasting impression on producer Al Jean after delivering a string of insults to hapless contestants.

Jean says, "I think Simon would be hilarious in the show. We're talking about a story where the Simpsons are having trouble getting MAGGIE, the baby, into nursery school.

"We thought it would be really funny if he played the nursery school admissions officer."
