Rock legend Sir Paul McCartney went down such a storm at last weekend's (26/27JUN04) GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL - sales of his last album BACK IN THE WORLD increased by a staggering 300 per cent.

Internet music store AMAZON.COM recorded an astonishing increase in music sales by many artists performing at the seminal British event.

Fellow Brits OASIS sold 330 per cent more copies of their second album (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY just hours after they performed at the event - despite negative reviews of their weekend set.

Rising stars Franz Ferdinand also registered a considerable increase of 300 per cent and an 80 per cent increase for THE Scissor Sisters took their eponymous debut album to the top of Amazon's 'Hot 100 Music Chart'.

HELEN MARQUIS, music merchandiser at Amazon.co.uk, insist the figures are a result of TV coverage of the festival: "This flurry of activity supports our theory of the 'Glastonbury effect' - whereby certain performances by artists at the festival result in a huge surge in sales of that band or artist's album. What came as a surprise, however, was the speed in which the results of the 'Glastonbury effect' were experienced on the site after the live broadcast.

"The live broadcast was always going to particularly important to fans this year as it was so hard to get hold of tickets for the festival."
