Ex-BEATLE Sir Paul McCartney and DJ Fatboy Slim have failed to block plans to build a peat processing plant next to their Hove, England beachfront homes.

The stars had claimed the proposed 300 metre (1,000 foot) factory would seriously impair the quality of their lives, as it would generate 50 lorries creating noise, dust and bad smells driving to and from the property in Shoreham Harbour.

However, the local council took just five minutes yesterday (27MAY03) to approve the plans - despite the celebrity opposition.

Councillor MICHAEL MENDOZA explains, "I think it is vitally important we realise and understand this is a working port. It is not a marina."
