Sophie Ellis-Bextor is ''heartened'' by the response to her new album.
The 'Murder On The Dancefloor' hitmaker releases her fifth studio record 'Wanderlust' today (20.01.14) and admits she wasn't sure how people would react to her move away from dance music to focus on down-tempo ballads.
She exclusively told BANG Showbiz: ''I knew it was a bit of a different record and I didn't know if people would get their heads around it but I've been really heartened, they've all been excellent.''
The 34-year-old singer, who finished fourth in 'Strictly Come Dancing' last year, is happy she's concentrating on her music once again but is finding it difficult to describe the new sound on her album.
She said: ''It's a bit rocky in parts and quite folky, it's got waltzes, fairytales and tales of spooky women in houses.
''The last album [Make a Scene] was incredibly dancey, I love that as well, but maybe it was a reaction to that. I was like, 'I've done that, let's see what the opposite is'.
''Dance music deals with the here and now, you can sing about being in love or lust, being angry or frustrated, but if you want to do something a bit more atmospheric and textured you can't really do that in dance music, it's an opportunity to find a different way of writing songs.''
The album was co-written, produced and arranged by acclaimed singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt and the pair had a strong vision for the record but Sophie doesn't feel pressure to get a number one album after more than 10 years in the industry.
She added: ''Quite a lot of the songs are a complete fantasy. I think you can probably tell from the album I've made that I don't feel under pressure for chart success. It's not really that kind of record. This is an album I made myself, it's quite indulgent, and it's quite a different feel but it's the one I really wanted to make.''
