An animated Star Wars is planned to hit US cinema screens later this year.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will open on August 15th in cinemas throughout North America and will be followed by a television series.

"I felt there were a lot more stories left to tell," Star Wars creator George Lucas said.

"I am eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the art of animation forward."

The film is being produced by Lucas's company LucasFilm, Warner Bros and Turner Broadcasting.

Clone Wars will take place between the events in the Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith films, and will feature both new and old characters.

A television series following the release of the movie will premiere on Cartoon Network and then air on TNT, later in the year.

"This is a breakthrough project – returning Star Wars to the big screen in a completely new way while beginning an exciting new chapter in George Lucas' legendary saga," Dan Fellman president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros Pictures said.

"We immediately felt that it would be a fantastic theatrical event and are thrilled to be bringing it to moviegoers."
