British comedian and actor Stephen Fry is set to write an episode of cult TV series Doctor Who.

Fry, who is also an acclaimed writer and director, is in discussions with the BBC over a possible contribution to the show.

He was an early favourite to become the new Doctor when plans to revive the series were unveiled in 2003, and British MPs nominated him as their ideal candidate for the role.

Fry himself said, "All I can say is I've done a couple of dramatised Doctor Whos for radio and internet and it may be that more things emerge in the future."

But a BBC spokesman said that there were no plans for Fry to act in the series.
