A small screen adaptation of Stephen King novel It has been crowned the scariest TV programme of all time by British viewers.

The mini-series - which aired on UK television in 1990 - beat out competition from creepy classics THE X-FILES and Twin Peaks to land the top spot in the RADIO TIMES magazine poll.

A spokesman for the TV listings publication says, "Stephen King books are spooky, not to say terrifying, but TV versions of them have generally been pitiful.

"So it was a shock to settle down to watch this one and actually be terrified."
