But 96 percent of that amount -- $28.8 million -- was earned at the Chinese box office alone. In its report of the film's success in China, today's (Monday) Hollywood Reporter observed, The strength of the Universal release in that market underscores the voracious appetite for 3D fare among Chinese moviegoers, even as 3D re-releases struggle in other parts of the world. The result pushed the film's worldwide theatrical earnings past the $1-billion mark.
