Author Alice Munro has become the 13th woman to land the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Canadian author, 82, was called a "master of the contemporary short story" by members of the Nobel Prize committee, who named her the 2013 recipient of the coveted accolade on Thursday (10Oct13).

The prize, which in recent years has been awarded to the likes of Doris Lessing and Harold Pinter, is worth eight million Swedish krona ($1.15 million/£770,000).

Thrilled Munro says, "I knew I was in the running, but I never thought I would win."

Born Alice Laidlaw in Ontario in 1931, Munro's beloved books include Dance of the Happy Shades, Dear Life, and Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage.

She has been dubbed the "Canadian Chekhov" and won biennial Man Booker International Prize for career-long achievement in 2009.

Munro announced that her 2012 short story collection Dear Life would be her final book earlier this year (13).
