Former Westlife star Shane Filan was so broke at the height of his money troubles he couldn't afford to buy toys for his children.

The Flying Without Wings hitmaker was declared bankrupt last year (12) after the property company he started with his brother Finbarr imploded following the global financial crisis in 2008.

The star admits he didn't realise how dire his situation was until he went to an Atm machine and discovered he only had $627 (£405) in the bank. He later hit breaking point when he couldn't afford to buy his son Patrick a cheap toy.

Speaking at the launch of his new single Everything To Me, Filan says, "I went to get money out and I had £405 (in the bank). I remember my son Patrick asking if I could buy him a Spider-Man toy and crying my eyes out because I couldn't.

"I had no money, no job and no end in sight. We had enough to... put food on the table, but it was scary."
