Star Trek: Into Darkness villain Benedict Cumberbatch has quit director Guillermo Del Toro's new horror movie Crimson Peak.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter the British actor has taken on another movie role and the projects' schedules clashed.

Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska are still signed to the film, according to the industry publication.

It's not the first time del Toro has had to replace a star for the film - Chastain stepped in when Emma Stone quit earlier this year (13).

Filming is set to begin in January (14).
