Dvd - Britain's Blockbuster Goes Bust
Britain's Dvd rental chain Blockbuster is to disappear from the high street after attempts to save the beleaguered firm with a buyout fell through.
The U.K. arm of the company, which was launched in 1989, was put into administration earlier this year (13) after a rise in online streaming and rental services led to a major slump in profits.
Bosses had hoped to find a buyer to bring the firm back from the brink of collapse, but it has now emerged the plan has fallen through.
The last of the company's rental stores will close on Monday (16Dec13), leaving 808 members of staff at 91 locations facing redundancy.
This time last year (12), the firm employed more than 4,000 staff members and boasted 528 stores.
Britain's iconic entertainment retailer Hmv faced a similar predicament when the company went into administration earlier this year (13), but the firm was eventually saved.
