The critically-acclaimed Captain America sequel has shattered April box office records in America with a $96.2 million (Gbp60.1 million) opening-weekend take.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stormed U.S. theatres on Friday (04Apr14) and has become the largest April debut on record.

Biblical epic Noah, which hit the top spot last week (30Mar14) drops to a distant second with $17 million (Gbp10.6 million), and Divergent is third with a $13 million (Gbp8.1 million) weekend.

Religious film God's Not Dead and Wes Anderson's comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel round out the new top five.

Meanwhile, Captain America: Winter Soldier has now netted over $303 million (Gbp189,000) globally.
