Cate Blanchett initially felt she'd ''bitten off more than she could chew'' with 'Blue Jasmine'.

The 44-year-old actress - who won Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her role in Woody Allen's hit film at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (12.01.14) - stars as trophy wife Jeanette Francis, known as Jasmine, who has marriage troubles with a wealthy but corrupt businessman Hal (Alec Baldwin) in the 2013 film.

Jasmine is a ''complex'' character and Blanchett had concerns when accepting the role about how she was going to do her alter-ego justice.

She told Vogue.co.uk: ''I felt when making the film that I'd bitten off more than I could chew. It was such a complex, absurd, intense role - it was like going into battle every day.''

The blonde beauty is delighted that the film has been a success and is pleased it appeals to different generations.

She added: ''I'm just happy that it's still on screens and that people are watching it - particularly that it's being enjoyed across different generations because the character does and says a lot of unpalatable things. If people can empathise with that then my job is done.''
