Charlie Hunnam - Charlie Hunnam Struggled In Pacific Rim Robot Costume
Actor Charlie Hunnam had to plan his bathroom breaks well in advance while filming new sci-fi epic Pacific Rim because designers forgot to make allowances in his robot costume so he could easily relieve himself.
The Sons of Anarchy star portrays the leader of a team of soldiers who pilot giant mechanical robots in a bid to save the world against an alien invasion, but Hunnam found the heavy monster suit a pain to wear for more than one reason.
He says, "Wearing that suit created traction on my shoulder so it was like someone pushing down on me for 14 hours a day.
"It's ostensibly a porous wet suit that had a little bit of fortified plastic to represent the carbon armour. Each piece of it would get clipped on so it took about 30 minutes to put it on and about 15 minutes to take it off. The real problem for the first two weeks is everything gets done very, very quickly and they didn't ever think to put in a pee flap so you can imagine it takes 45 minutes to take on and off, so you really don't want to be taking it on and off all day. But it was really hot and I had to drink a lot of water so it was a problem."
But things got easier when designers added a much-needed addition to the suit: "After a couple of weeks they gave me a pee flap so all was good!"
Director Guillermo del Toro considered giving Hunnam the costume as a movie keepsake after the shoot wrapped, but the actor insisted otherwise because he would not have treasured it.
He tells Wenn, "There was some talk of keeping the suit but it would have just been burned immediately had they let me keep it so I thought someone else should have it. I was so sick of wearing that suit by the end of it!"
Hunnam isn't the only action star to struggle with his bathroom needs while in costume - new Superman Henry Cavill recently revealed he had to ration his water intake during filming for Man of Steel, while Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield now benefits from a redesigned suit so he can easily urinate in between takes.
