Chris Brown handed out free sports shoes to children in need in Los Angeles on Saturday (06.07.13).

The 'Fine China' singer, who is still on probation for beating his ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, and was recently charged for allegedly leaving the scene of a crime without exchanging proper information and for driving without a valid licence, in connection with a minor car crash in Los Angeles last month, claims he wants to inspire his younger fans to take advantage of better opportunities.

The 24-year-old star explained to People.com that he grew up with only one pair of shoes, adding: ''I used to have to borrow my cousin's clothes.

''So being able to come from that poverty-stricken environment and then being able to get out of it is what I tried to [do]. ... I just want to show the kids and have them have a better light of opportunities for them to do what they need to do.''

The event was sponsored by Reebok as part of Chris' Unity Campaign, which he said aims to encourage ''all races, genders, sexes, (everyone) gay or straight to love each other!''

Chris, who has reportedly rekindled his relationship with his on/off model girlfriend Karrueche Tran, is set to release his new album 'X' on July 16.

The 'Beautiful People' hitmaker previously said he wants to prove that he is trying to be a better person and when trouble happens in a person's life it does not get them down ''forever''.

He said: ''My story or my life or my legacy can hopefully show them that once you're down, that don't just mean you're down forever. You never let up. A lot of the negatives that we always go through, we're gonna have to get through that. It sounds crazy, but that's what makes us who we are.''
