Chris Martin has credited music with helping him get over his marriage problems.

The Coldplay frontman and estranged wife Gwyneth Paltrow jointly announced their ''conscious uncoupling'' earlier this year and he has revealed how he channelled his emotions into his lyrics for the band's new album 'Ghost Stories'.

He explained: ''You can choose your paths in life, I find, when you get to a point where you're like 'I could either jump off a bridge or I could try and turn this around.'

''I'm sure lots of people have that in much harder instances. You just find the right tools.

''I feel so grateful. Music, especially over the last couple of years, has been very alchemising.

''[If] you're going through something difficult in your life, music for me is always a friend and something that helps you to figure things out - that's what I'm doing in the middle of the night.''

Chris says the band's new album is ''so important'' to him as he poured so much of his personal turmoil into his work.

Appearing on Steve Wright's BBC Radio 2 radio show, he explained: ''It's so important for me, that album. It hasn't really crossed my mind what it means for anyone else ... because I needed it. It was how do you turn a bad feeling into a good feeling?

''I'm very grateful to be here. Every day is a blessing. That's how I feel.''
