A campaign to drive Sir Cliff Richard to the top of the U.K. charts has flopped after the song failed to crack the top 40.

The music veteran's devotees launched the scheme last week (ends24Aug14) in a bid to support the star as police investigate an allegation of sexual abuse dating back to the 1980s.

However, the plan to get 1992 track I Still Believe In You to number one ended in failure on Sunday (24Aug14) when the track entered the chart at a disappointing number 57.

The single's return to the chart came just a day after Richard was questioned by police over claims a boy under the age of 16 was sexually assaulted in 1985. The star vehemently denies the allegation, calling it "completely false".
