Sports superstar David Beckham has been snubbed for a knighthood in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year's Honours List, according to reports.

The soccer icon's name was put forward as a potential candidate in May (13) following his retirement from the sport, in recognition of his hugely successful career and his involvement in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

He had been widely tipped to receive the top accolade in 2014, but royal officials have reportedly decided against making him a knight of the realm, according to Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper.

Beckham received a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Obe) medal in 2003.

The official list of honourees will be announced on Tuesday (31Dec13).
