Dexter Finale Draws Huge -- Albeit Angry -- Audience

The final episode of Dexter, the original series carried by CBS-owned pay-TV channel Showtime, drew the series' best ratings ever Sunday, the channel said on Monday. The conclusion attracted 2.8 million viewers at 9:00 p.m. and, with repeats, a total of 3.3 million for the night. (The finale may have triggered more worldwide angry reaction from viewers than for any other series finale since The Sopranos. Today's Sydney Morning Herald published several tweets from outraged Australian viewers, then concluded: R.I.P. Dexter. What a dismissive waste of the inner vigilante in all of us.) The season finale of Ray Donovan, which followed Dexter, drew 1.4 million and 2.1 million including repeats. Showtime said it was the the highest-rated finale for a new show in its history. The solid ratings results for the two cable shows came despite big ratings for the broadcast networks' coverage of the Primetime Emmy Awards and Sunday Night Football.
