Doctor Who fans have launched a petition online to have the Empire State Building in New York lit up Tardis blue to mark the 50th anniversary of the cult sci-fi show on 23 November (13).

The campaign on Change.org has garnered over 14,000 signatures since it went live last week (23Sep13), and it is just a few hundred shy of reaching its goal of 15,000.

In a post on the website, organisers write, "This is the first time a sci-fi show has lasted 50 years. It's a landmark occasion. The Doctor has visited Nyc many times over the years, most recently earlier this season. Now NYSciFi & Fantasy (www.NYSciFi.com) wants to bring Nyc to The Doctor to celebrate!

"We are attempting to partner with the Empire State Building (www.esbnyc.com) to make this happen (all official paperwork was submitted to the Empire State Building on 9/23/13)."

Scottish actor Peter Capaldi was recently announced as the new Doctor Who, taking over from the current 11th timelord, Matt Smith, who will depart the hit British series after filming the upcoming annual Christmas special.
