Karen Black lost her battle with cancer at 74.

The Hollywood actress has died at a clinic in Los Angeles, three years after she was diagnosed with cancer, and her husband Stephen Eckelberry took to Facebook to inform her fans of the sad news.

He wrote: ''It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago. Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me.''

Karen was diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November 2010 after which she had to undergo an operation to remove a third of her pancreas before taking on chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

She overcame the disease in July 2011 before it returned in June last year when it began to spread.

Earlier this year her husband launched an appeal to crowdfund her ever-increasing medical costs, where he turned to money-raising website GoFundMe to raise

$32,000 which would enable him to cover the cost of her treatment.

Hoards of fans responded to the healthcare campaign and helped beat the target.

Within a week they raised $45,829 and donated more than $60,000 in four months to fund treatment in Europe but unfortunately Karen was too ill to undergo the treatment.

Karen shot to fame in 1969, starring as a prostitute in 'Easy Rider', alongside Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper and has managed to star in 100 movies over a career spanning 40 years.

Tributes dedicated to the talented actress have been flooding in on Twitter, actress Mia Farrow tweeted: ''Wonderful Karen Black rest in peace.''

Juliette Lewis added: ''Karen Black was my mentor and a 2nd mother to me. She inspired everyone she came in contact with. Her spirit/strength My luv is beyond words.''
