Michael Schumacher's fans marked the sportsman's 45th birthday on Friday (03Jan14) by organising a special silent vigil outside the hospital in France where he remains in a coma.

The retired racing driver has been in a medically-induced coma since he fell and hit his head in a skiing accident on Sunday (29Dec13). He has undergone two operations since he was admitted to The Grenoble University Hospital Center, and remained unconscious as he turned 45 on Friday.

Members of his former team Ferrari's fanclub showed their support for the star by putting together a special event on his birthday, gathering from all over Europe to converge outside the hospital wearing red, the team's signature colour.

A message posted on the Scuderia Ferrari Club's official Facebook.com page before the event reads, "In these difficult days and on the occasion of his birthday the Scuderia Ferrari Clubs want to show their support for Michael Schumacher, organising tomorrow a silent and respectful event all in red at the Grenoble University Hospital Center."

Pictures taken outside the hospital on Friday show fans wearing Ferrari-branded outfits gathered outside the hospital.

The vigil comes shortly after Schumacher's family released a statement thanking fans for their support and well wishes.

The statement, posted on the star's official website, reads, "Following Michael's skiing accident, we would like to thank the people from all around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for his recovery. They are giving us great support.

"We all know he is a fighter and will not give up. Thank you."
