Gravity and Her were awarded the top prize by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lacfa), as the movies tied for the title of Best Picture of 2013.

The members of the critics' group were deadlocked on Sunday (08Dec13) as Alfonso Cuaron's space drama and Spike Jonze's unconventional romance movie were the first of three ties at Lafca's annual prizegiving.

Also sharing awards were Cate Blanchett for her role in Blue Jasmine and Adele Exarchopoulos in Blue Is the Warmest Color, as they were both given the title of Best Actress.

In the biggest surprise of the ceremony, James Franco was feted with the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as an eccentric drug dealer in Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers. Jared Leto also tied for the prize, but has been considered a frontrunner this awards season, thanks to his portrayal of an AIDS-stricken transgender in Dallas Buyers Club.

In addition, veteran actor Bruce Dern was given the Best Actor prize and Lupita Nyong'o won Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years a Slave.

Cuaron didn't just take home the Best Film prize - he also walked away with the Best Director accolade, as well as Best Cinematography and Best Editing, earning the most awards out of any other film.

Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke earned a Best Screenplay win for Before Midnight, acclaimed music producer T Bone Burnett claimed Best Music Score for the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis, Best Animation went to French-Belgian film Ernest & Celestine, Actress/director Sarah Polley won yet another prize for Best Documentary Stories We Tell, and controversial lesbian drama Blue is the Warmest Color nabbed the Best Foreign Language Film, just hours after it was given the British Independent Film Award for Best International Independent Film.
