Harvey Weinstein is trying to revive Charles James' fashion label.

The movie mogul has reportedly approached the late designer's children, Charles Jr. and Louise, about a licensing deal with an option to buy the company in the hope of restoring the brand to its former glory.

Charles, famed for his sculpted ball gowns, was known as 'America's First Couturier' and was one of the masters of his craft before he retired in 1958, subsequently passing away in 1978.

A source told the New York Post's Page Six: ''Talks have been ongoing to breathe new life into the Charles James name. There is a lot of interest to carry on Charles's legacy.''

Harvey's interest comes as the grand opening of the new 'Charles James: Beyond Fashion' exhibition at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute was feted with the star-studded Met Gala on Monday night (06.05.14).

The infamous movie producer's fashion plans aren't hugely surprising since he previously invested in heritage label Halston, selling his share in 2011, and is married to Marchesa co-founder, Georgina Chapman.

He is rumoured to have enlisted Georgina and her brother Edward as creative consultants for the Charles James revival, with the intention of creating an ''exclusive couture house'' covering everything from clothing to fragrances.

The source added: ''When they bought Halston, Harvey was part of a consortium. He always believed in licensing. In this case, the Weinstein Company would be the sole partner with the James family.

''So there would be one voice, with the Weinstein Company running the business.''
