Actor Hugh Grant has accused British Prime Minister David Cameron of "betraying" the victims of media intrusion as the debate over state regulation of the U.K. press widens.

The Notting Hill star is a leading light in a campaign to regulate the British media in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal, but he has been left stunned by Cameron's stance on the issue.

He blames the U.K. leader for a delay in implementing the recommendations of a wide-ranging public inquiry, published last year (12), and accuses Cameron of being too scared to take on powerful media groups.

Grant tells the Bbc, "(It's) the same old story that we have seen for the last 70 years, which is that our executive are (sic) basically in hock to big newspaper barons. They are terrified of the press... The Prime Minister is now betraying those victims (of media intrusion) and betraying his own promises."

Grant is among dozens of stars who received a damages payment after it emerged a private investigator working for the News of the World illegally accessed their cell phone voicemail messages. The newspaper was closed in 2011 in the wake of the scandal.
