Idina Menzel - Idina Menzel: 'John Travolta And I Are Buddies'
Singer/actress Idina Menzel has laughed off John Travolta's embarrassing Oscars slip-up after he mispronounced her name during the live telecast, insisting she and the actor are "buddies".
The Grease star took the stage at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on 2 March (14) to introduce the Broadway favourite's Let It Go performance from Frozen, which went on to win the Best Original Song award, but he got tangled up over Menzel's name and called her "the wickedly talented, one and only Adele Dazeem".
The misreading turned the actor into the butt of jokes and even inspired a website for fans to 'Travolta-fy' their own names, and the Hollywood actor subsequently released a statement which read: "I've been beating myself up all day. Then I thought... what would Idina Menzel say? She'd say, 'Let it go, let it go!' Idina is incredibly talented and I am so happy Frozen took home two Oscars Sunday night!"
Now Menzel has opened up about the headline-grabbing incident, admitting the mistake surprised her as she prepared to take the stage on Hollywood's biggest night.
She explains, "I had all of these visuals set for myself, the meditations (before stepping onstage). (But) that (Travolta's introduction) threw me for a minute. But then I just got back on track and reminded myself of where I was, and what a beautiful moment it was."
Menzel reveals Travolta later sent her a note and a large bouquet of flowers to apologise for the flub.
She tells Billboard.com, "He was really gracious and sent this gorgeous email, and we're buddies and it's all cool."
The producers behind Menzel's new Broadway play If/Then even capitalised on the "Adele Dazeem" mishap by using the new name on the show's playbill, and the actress insists she holds nothing against Travolta.
She says, "Please. I mean, I've only benefited from it!"
