Nadezhda Tolokonnikova - Jailed Russian Punk Star Reconnects With Husband
The husband of jailed Russian punk star Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has finally been able to reconnect with his wife after prison authorities revealed the location of her new detention centre.
The Pussy Riot rocker was transferred from a jail in Mordovia to a more remote penal colony last month (Oct13), but the exact location of her whereabouts was not shared with her family.
The lack of information and co-operation from the Russian prison service prompted Tolokonnikova's father, Andrei, and husband, Petya Verzilov, to go public with their battle to locate the rocker, while human rights campaigners from Amnesty International also weighed in on the controversy.
Then, on Thursday (14Nov13), Russian official Vladimir Lukin revealed that the musician was being held in a prison in Krasnoyarsk Krai, in Siberia, near where she was born. He also confirmed that Tolokonnikova had been receiving treatment in the jail's medical unit, but stopped short of sharing any further details about her condition.
Verzilov has now spoken to Tolokonnikova for the first time in 26 days, and has assured fans she is doing well at the Tuberculosis Hospital No. 1 in Krasnoyarsk, where she is undergoing tests for "various conditions". However, he insists the star, who received medical treatment in Mordovia after embarking on a hunger strike, does not have the lung condition tuberculosis.
She also told her husband that conditions at her new detention centre were much better than those at her former jail, according to the Bbc.
The poor conditions at the Mordovia prison prompted the rock star to stage a hunger strike earlier this year (13).
Tolokonnikova and her bandmate Maria Alekhina, who were both jailed for two years on hooliganism charges, are due to be released in March (14).
