John Mayer wants to create a new reality TV series.

The 36-year-old singer wants to expand to carve out another career behind the scenes and is reportedly pitching an idea for a new show called 'My Funny Friend'.

A source said: ''His concept is: everyone thinks they have a buddy who's so hysterical, he or she should be in a comedy. So people nominate their friends, and they go through a series of evaluations to determine if they're actually funny or not.''

The 'Something's Missing' hitmaker wants celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain to host the series.

The insider added to Us Weekly magazine: ''John thinks it has a great human-interest angle.

''John's saying it's a show about 'dreams. He's telling people, 'Think how much joy there is in seeing a friend happy!' ''

Meanwhile, John's ex-girlfriend Katy Perry recently revealed she was going to be using their 18-month on/off romance as material for her new album.

She said: ''There's no bad blood. But I'm sure there will be inspired songs.''
