A cowboy hat worn by Hollywood actor John Wayne sold for $37,500 (£23,437) at an auction on Tuesday (29Apr14).

The camel-coloured felt headwear was used by the legendary actor in six major Western movies from The Comancheros in 1961 to The Undefeated in 1969.

"John Wayne, 'Comancheros'" is written in black marker underneath the front brim. His stage name is also written on the leather sweatband alongside the number "#3".

The accessory was sold via Nate D. Sanders Auctions in Los Angeles.
