Johnny Depp drew inspiration for his portrayal as Tonto in The Lone Ranger from his great grandmother and instructed the onset make-up artist to make him look just like his Native American ancestor.
The actor has Cherokee, Creek and Chickasaw blood running through his veins and he was determined to pull off a realistic version of the Indian hero, so he turned to old photos of his late relative for help in creating his movie look.
He tells Wenn, "I saw my great grandmother (as the model for Tonto). She did apparently have quite a bit of Indian blood. She wore the braids and had the tobacco down her bosom. That was the idea, to sculpt me into my great grandmother. The make-up technician just killed it."
Depp, who became an honorary member of the Comanche tribe while filming the Disney action adventure in New Mexico last year (12), recently admitted he wanted his version of Tonto to become a role model for young Native Americans and encourage them to strive for greatness in their lives.
He is well aware that not everyone will be a fan of The Lone Ranger, but he hopes his tribe brothers and sisters will be proud of his work.
He says: "As long as I've done no harm and represented at the very least the Comanche nation in the proper light, that's all I can do. There's always gonna be naysayers."
