Lily Allen - Lily Allen Defends Racy New Video

Lily Allen has defended her decision to 'twerk' with a troupe of scantily-clad African-American female dancers in her new video for the song Hard Out Here following attacks about the race of her co-stars.

The video for her comeback single hit the Internet on Tuesday night (12Nov13) and immediately became a hit as fans flocked to see the Smile singer seemingly poking fun at her pop peers Miley Cyrus and Rihanna by mocking their explicit antics on stage and in promos.

The clip begins with Allen on an operating table for a liposuction procedure, before she rips off her surgical gown to reveal a sexy, skin-tight bodysuit and grinds provocatively with a number of dancers, who shake their backsides, pour water on each other and writhe around for the cameras.

But not everyone is a fan and it seems many didn't quite understand that Allen is poking fun at gender objectification within the music industry in the video. Among the nearly 1.5 million people who have seen the promo were some who objected to scenes of the singer 'twerking' with her dancers.

And some have questioned her use of mainly black dancers.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday (13Nov13), Allen attempted to nip any controversy, writing, "If anyone thinks for a second that I requested specific ethnicities for the video, they're wrong... If anyone thinks that after asking the girls to audition, I was going to send any of them away because of the colour of their skin, they're wrong.

"The message is clear. Whilst I don't want to offend anyone. I do strive to provoke thought and conversation. The video is meant to be a lighthearted satirical video that deals with objectification of women within modern pop culture. It has nothing to do with race, at all."

And she defiantly adds, "I'm not going to apologise because I think that would imply that I'm guilty of something... I would not only be surprised but deeply saddened if I thought anyone came away from that video feeling taken advantage of, or compromised in any way."
