Residents living near Dublin's iconic Croke Park will be handed $640,000 (£400,000) in compensation following a row over an upcoming residency by country superstar Garth Brooks.

The Friends in Low Places hitmaker is set to rock the venue in July (14). He was originally scheduled to play three nights there, but extended the stay to five concerts due to high demand from Irish fans.

The extension caused outrage among locals, who had reportedly struck a deal with bosses at the Gaelic Athletic Association (Gaa), which runs the venue, agreeing that no more than three consecutive gigs would take place.

Mediator Kieran Mulvey was drafted in to resolve the issue, and now Gaa officials have agreed to hand over the lump sum from Brooks' concert profits. The funds will help local projects.

Mulvey says, "These events caused disruption and inconvenience and have now been increased disproportionately by the holding of eight concerts and an external sporting event in one year.

"In retrospect, the decision to promote five extra continuous nights of concerts was misjudged and was compounded by the way in which they were announced and handled."

More than 400,000 fans are expected to attend the sold-out shows, which will take place from 25 to 29 July (14).
