Singer Marianne Faithfull blames the promiscuous attitudes of youngsters during the Swinging Sixties for the child sex abuse scandal engulfing a tide of veteran stars in the U.K.

The As Tears Go By hitmaker became an icon of culture-shifting 1960s Britain due to her relationship with Sir Mick Jagger, but she now admits the easy-going attitudes of the era might have had sinister consequences.

Several well known public figures from the time - including singer/artist Rolf Harris and Pr guru Max Clifford - have been jailed this year (14) for sex assaults on girls and young women dating back to the '60s, with a number of other household names still under investigation.

The scandal snowballed after veteran Dj and Tv presenter Sir Jimmy Savile was unmasked as a serial paedophile following his death in 2011, amid allegations he abused hundreds of children and even had sex with dead bodies in a hospital morgue.

Now Faithfull has revealed she fears the carefree attitudes of '60s Britain are to blame for the outrage.

She tells The Sunday Times Magazine, "I was talking to (a friend) about Jimmy Savile. I said, 'Do you think it's our fault in some way? Was it the Sixties?' You know what I think? I think that these older guys like Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris and the Pr man (Clifford), they were really suffering from enormous envy of us: our beauty, our freedom, our lack of shame. Of course we weren't f**king children, or people in morgues. But I think all those people saw us and thought, 'Goddammit' and somehow went mad.

"I didn't know Jimmy Savile at all but I just knew enough to know that I didn't want to be anywhere near him."
