British actor Orlando Bloom was left heartbroken during a recent United Nations trip to a Syrian refugee camp after meeting boys his son's age who planned to fight in the troubled nation's ongoing civil conflict.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), travelled to the Zaatari camp on the border of Syria and Jordan in April (14), and he admits the trip was emotionally tough for him as he couldn't imagine his young son Flynn preparing to go to war.

Bloom spoke to one father in the camp and explains, "He held his four-year-old son's arm in the air and said, 'My son is going to fight for the revolution when he's old enough.' But if these kids go on to fight... (they will become part of) a lost generation...

"Having a three-year-old myself, it breaks your heart. It's not something you can even comprehend. You would die before you allow them to have that experience."

The actor is now calling on fans to lend their support to Unicef to help organisation officials provide the support and help the displaced families need as the Syrian conflict, which began in early 2011, continues.

He adds, "Kids are seeing far too much violence and torture. They have witnessed such pain. They need help. They've lived lives like you and I. All they want to do is go home. Their kids are desperate for an education."

"The real issue is donor fatigue... but we're talking about children. Everyone's scared of the issue, I get that, but you don't have to be afraid to support the work that Unicef is doing to save these children...

"These people, they just don't leave you. I can be wherever I am in the world but they're still waking up in the baking-hot desert and/or freezing cold at night and making do with what little they have in their life. There are still children who are dying. So it's not something you switch on and off. And it's not something to be ignored."
