Oscar Pistorius returned to court in South Africa on Monday (30Jun14) after a panel of experts deemed him fit to stand trial for killing his girlfriend.
The trial in South Africa was halted in May (14) for a six-week break to assess the paralympian's mental health after a psychiatrist testified the sprinter had been suffering from an anxiety disorder since he was a youngster, partly due to the amputation of both of his lower legs.
Pistorius underwent weeks of testing to determine whether he was mentally incapacitated when he shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year (13).
In a Pretoria court on Monday, a batch of psychiatric reports were analysed and prosecutor Gerrie Nel confirmed, "Mr Pistorus did not suffer from a mental illness or defect that would have rendered him criminally not responsible for the offence charged."
Pistorius' defence counsel Barry Roux did not dispute the conclusion and the trial resumed.
The 27-year-old sportsman stands accused of murdering the model at his home in Pretoria last year (13). He admits shooting Steenkamp but insists he thought she was an intruder. The trial continues.
