British rocker Phil Collins is donating his entire collection of artefacts related to Texas' historic Battle of the Alamo to local officials.

The Genesis star, who has been obsessed with the famous battleground since he was a child, visited the 1836 Battle of the Alamo and Texas Revolutionary shrine in San Antonio on Thursday (26Jun14) and announced plans to hand over his vast memorabilia haul to bosses at the Texas General Land Office.

Collins' trove, which includes a rifle owned by American soldier Davy Crockett and his leather shot pouch, is thought to be the world's largest private collection of Alamo pieces, and is worth millions.

During the visit, the singer joked that he had spent "all the money that I made from music" on the historical items to commemorate the pivotal event during the Texas Revolution, and confessed he was parting with the pieces to ensure they would be better cared for by experts.

He explained, "Some people would buy Ferraris, some people would buy houses, I bought old bits of metal and old bits of paper. It's at my home, in my basement in Switzerland. I look at it every day, but no one else was enjoying it."

Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson revealed a new building would be constructed to house the epic collection, while some items would go on display at the current Alamo site later this year (14).

But that doesn't mean Collins will stop buying artefacts: "Once I've lived with whatever I buy for a month, I'll ship it over here."
