Actor-turned-director Rufus Norris has been appointed the new head of Britain's prestigious National Theatre in London.

The Broken filmmaker will take over from Sir Nicholas Hytner when he steps down as the artistic director in 2015.

Newly-knighted Sir Kenneth Branagh was among the frontrunners for the top theatre job.

Norris comes with quite a pedigree on the world stage - his Broadway production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 2008 received five Tony Award nominations and he also created the opera Dr Dee with Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

He made his filmmaking debut in 2012 with Broken, which starred Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy.

Responding to the news he is the National's new man, Norris says, "I'd like to think you can do this job and direct a movie a year alongside it - but clearly that's not the case. It's an enormous job."
