Veteran U.S. soap star Charles Keating has lost his battle with cancer.

The British-born actor died on Saturday (09Aug14) at the age of 72.

Keating began his career onstage with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England in the 1970s, before focusing on his screen work and appearing as Rex Mottram in a U.K. Tv adaptation of Brideshead Revisited.

However, his big break came after landing the role of U.S. Tv villain Carl Hutchins in popular soap Another World, which earned him a Daytime Emmy Award in 1996.

He also featured on other soap operas All My Children and As the World Turns, and had small roles on dramas Alias, Xena: Warrior Princess and Sex and the City.

On the big screen, he landed roles in 1992's The Bodyguard and 1990's Awakenings, as well as The Thomas Crown Affair and comedy Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo.

He returned to his stage roots in a 1986 Broadway revival of Joe Orton's Loot, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor.

His fellow Another World co-stars Mark Pinter and Alicia Coppola have offered up tributes to Keating, with Coppola writing on Twitter.com, "Charles Keating has passed. I am so very sad. Along w/ (with) @LindaDano, he was my very first acting teacher. The actress I am is because of them."
