Solange Knowles staged a rally in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday (14Jul13) to express her outrage after a man accused of murdering tragic Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was acquitted.

Neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman claimed he shot 17-year-old Martin in self-defence in February, 2012, and on Saturday (13Jul13) a jury acquitted him of second-degree murder.

Several famous faces, including Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, took to their Twitter.com pages to complain about the verdict, while Beyonce even held a minute of silence during her Saturday night (13Jul13) concert in Nashville, Tennessee in honour of Martin.

A day later, Beyonce's sister Solange took to the streets of New York City to stage a protest.

The singer attended a rally outside Borough Hall in Brooklyn and held a plaque quoting Malcolm X's famous words: "I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against."

Hundreds turned out to back Knowles, and she later took to her Twitter.com page to thank them for their efforts.

In a series of posts, she writes, "Thank you to everyone who came out to support Bklyn (Brooklyn) 4 (for) Trayvon rally! This was just a start to a long journey of justice and equality! Seeing & gathering with people today/tonight all for the same fight helped to restore my faith in humanity."

Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx, who led a candle-lit vigil in New York to remember Martin on the one-year anniversary of his death, has taken to his Twitter page to reach out to the teenager's family.

In a post, he writes, "I want to wrap my arms around Trayvon's parents and family during this emotional time. Trayvon will live in our hearts forever. We will make sure that he did not die in vain."
