In-demand moviemaker Steve McQueen has confirmed he has quit the planned biopic about Nigerian musician Fela Kuti.

The Brit was slated to reteam with his 12 Years a Slave leading man Chiwetel Ejiofor for the project, but tells The Hollywood Reporter the project is "dead".

MCQueen says, "They didn't have the money. It's just one of those things that happens in this business."

Ejiofor would have played the world music icon in the film, which MCQueen had helped to write.
