What The Emmys Had Going For It: Surprise

At one point towards the end of the Emmy Awards proceedings Sunday night, host Neil Patrick Harris exclaimed Twitter-fashion: This just in. Nobody In America is winning their Emmy office pool. Surprises galore. Even winners expressed their surprise. I did not see this coming, said Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan as he accepted the best drama award. Many had figured that it would go to Netflix contender House of Cards. However, Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, who had been favored to win the Emmy for Outstanding Actor in the drama category, lost out to The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels. The award for best comedy, however, was no surprise at all. It went to Modern Family, marking the fourth year in a row that it had received the award. What was surprising, however, was that none of the members of its ensemble cast won. Merritt Wever, a member of the cast of Nurse Jackie, set the stage for the surprises that followed as she accepted the first Emmy award of the night for best supporting actress in a comedy series, beating the favorite, two-time winner Julie Bowen of Modern Family. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Um, I got to go, bye, she said, and left the stage, stunning the audience. Returning to the cameras faster than he had anticipated, host Harris commented, Merritt Wever, best speech ever. Speaking to reporters backstage later, Wever explained, I'm sorry I didn't thank anyone. I was going to cry. Commented the Associated Press's David Bauder in his lede: The Emmys lived up to its reputation as the least predictable entertainment awards show. Ratings for the CBS telecast were up 15 percent from a year ago to 15.29 million viewers versus 13.26 million a year ago. But the telecast failed to outdraw NBC's Sunday Night Football, which drew 18.69 million viewers.
